IBO SPEED

A compound bow's published IBO Speed indicates how fast the bow can launch a 350 grain arrow when the bow is set for 70 pounds of peak draw weight and 30 inches of total draw length. It's safe to think of IBO Speeds as a compound bow's "horsepower rating," but remember that the bow's actual settings and arrow mass will significantly impact real-world arrow speeds.

AXLE TO AXLE LENGTH

A bow's A2A length is basically what it sounds like - the distance from the center of one cam, measured at the cam's axle, to the other. You can think of this as the bow's height. Just remember the bow will actually stand 3 to 6 inches taller than the A2A length, since the cams extend beyond the axles. Consider this specification an estimate (±.250").

BRACE HEIGHT

A bow's brace height is the distance from the string to the pivot point (deepest part) of the grip. Think of this as the bow's width. Bow's with longer brace heights tend to generate less speed, but they are easier to draw back. Bow's with shorter brace heights tend to generate more speed, but they are more difficult to draw back. Published brace heights tend to be accurate (±.125").

DRAW WEIGHTS

A bow's draw weight is the peak effort required to draw the bow back. All modern compound bows are designed to permit draw weight adjustments to suit the individual user, but only within a particular range. Some bows only adjust within a narrow 10 pound range - say between 60 and 70 pounds. Other bows, particularly youth bows, may have 50+ pounds of on-board adjustments available.
